Abortion Pill Reversal

Abortion Pill Reversal

If you are questioning your abortion decision, you are not alone. Help is available.

Some women who have taken the abortion pill struggle emotionally and wonder whether the process can be stopped. Abortion Pill Reversal is a protocol available to potentially reverse the effects of the first abortion drug (mifepristone) by interrupting the process.

How APR Works

After taking mifepristone, some women experience regret and remorse. They may question whether they can continue their pregnancies.

This can be a frightening and nerve-wracking time, but APR can provide an opportunity to continue the pregnancy.

APR involves taking progesterone orally, vaginally, or by injection.  Providers trained in this protocol administer doses of this hormone. Progesterone can outnumber and outcompete the effects of mifepristone (which blocks this hormone during a medical abortion).

Progesterone has been used to support pregnancies for over 50 years, and one study found that it helped continue pregnancies in 64% of cases (when administered intramuscularly).

Abortion Pill Reversal is most effective if taken within 24–48 hours after taking mifepristone. However, it may be successful up to 72 hours after taking this first drug.

It is critical to note that APR will not be effective if you have already taken misoprostol, the second drug in the medical abortion regimen. Misoprostol induces uterine contractions that expel the pregnancy from the body.

While APR doesn’t guarantee you’ll continue your pregnancy, there is hope if you act quickly. There are more resources than you may realize.
